I met Matt in a printmaking class during my first semester of college. I remember the way his eyes twinkled while he talked to me as he smoked his American Spirits by the pond outside the building. Rain or shine, he was someone I could always count on to be in the studio, scratching at his plates, drinking coffee, looking in art books, talking to beginners…which many times was me. I remember he even saved my ass during the last weeks of my final semester by printing my MASSIVE etching perfectly and helping me make the accompanying frame to house it in. Matt is a special someone I think of often even though its been years since we’ve talked. He is mysterious in a non-threatening way, like a younger Santa Claus, and I mean that in the best possible way.

I painted this in about an hour, while he sat on a stool talking to me in my studio. Matt, wherever you are, you are awesome, you are loved and I miss you!! xo

If you haven’t already, please check Matt out in my portrait show, “Feeling Blue” up through March 25, 2016 in the Red Mountain Gallery at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nevada 🙂

  1. Charlotte, sadly I cannot make it there to see this show, but just this portrait alone speaks to me more loudly than many things have of late. On a late night while I struggled immensely in the print shop attempting to broaden my repertoire, drawing blank when Matt walked in and said, ” I always wonder why sculptures don’t just draw their sculptures?” 🙂
